Acer’s Chromebook 315 continues the company’s tradition of affordable and intriguing Chromebooks, with several points of interest. It’s Acer’s first Chromebook with an AMD processor and integrated Radeon graphics. It’s also a relatively gigantic Chromebook, with a 15.6-inch screen (most have screens ranging from 11 to 14 inches). But the price is also worth noting: as low as $ 279.99, the company said at CES 2019 in Las Vegas.
The Acer Chromebook 14 (CB3-431-C5FM) and Chromebook Spin 11 both hit the $ 500 price point, but the Chromebook 315 is aiming even lower. Acer hasn’t revealed all the minimum specs for what it calls the CB315-2HT, but we do know there is a non-touch option, the CB315-2H. There is also “up to” 8 GB of RAM and 32 GB of eMMC storage.
However, what we’ve never seen before is an AMD-based Chromebook, and customers of the Acer Chromebook 315 now have a choice of two: the AMD A6-9220C and the AMD A4-9120C. . Both have built-in Radeon graphics, so there’s hardware acceleration for tasks like video and some low-end games. Keep in mind that ChromeOS devices can now run Android apps as well.
It is possible that discharging some media applications also had a positive effect on battery life. Acer claims up to ten hours, which would increase the Chromebook 14’s battery life by about an hour or two.
Perhaps the only obvious downside is the display. Although this is a large 15.6 inch, it is still only 1080p (1920×1080) resolution. This is probably fine for an educational device and will have a positive impact on battery life. The larger screen will also provide a wider canvas for videos and other content. But increasing the 1080p resolution on a larger screen will negatively impact the number of pixels per inch, meaning text and images will appear slightly more blurry than normal.
Other features of note include a pair of upward-facing speakers that flank the keyboard and the use of a pair of USB-C ports for charging and viewing. The keyboard is backlit, according to Acer, but only on the touchscreen model.
Acer plans to ship the Chromebook 315 in the first quarter to US customers. Here’s what we know about the specs:
